News Story: Computer system for Hawkei vehicles tested

A C4I integral Computing System for the Australian Army's Hawkei vehicle has been tested by the government's Capability Acquisition and Sustainment Group, the Australian Ministry of Defense announced on Monday.

The CASG Land 121 Phase 4 project team conducted the tests at the Monegeetta Proving Ground and signed a project charter for the system with nine companies involved in the system.

CASG identified the companies as Thales Australia, Cablex, Elbit Land Systems Australia, Esterline, Harris Australia, Kongsberg, Raytheon, Rockwell Collins, and Thomas Global Systems.

"Using generic vehicle architecture and a central computing concept to host various C4I systems and communications, the ICS will optimize and centralize the flow of information to the user, enabling rapid decision making and multi-tasking at levels not previously achievable on land based platforms," said Land 121 Phase 4 Project Director Col. John McLean said in a press release.

News Story: Storms Disrupt First-Ever Taiwan Maritime and Defense Expo

TAIPEI - The Kaohsiung International Maritime and Defense Industry Expo held last week in southern Taiwan could be considered a public relations disaster. But despite being pancaked between two typhoons -- forcing a delay of one day that pushed it into the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival -- and ending with numerous exhibitors, visitors, and guests failing to show up, the expo still managed to stand up despite a second typhoon slamming into the island, further reaping chaos and destruction. 

The first maritime expo of its kind was a serious effort, despite the disarray, of introducing the international defense industry to Taiwan’s shipbuilding capabilities and programs. Exhibitions were broken down into amphibious task force equipment, combat systems, communications, construction, platform equipment, propellers, radar, shafting, ship design, telemetry and underwater operations. 

Local entities and companies included Ching Fu Shipbuilding, Coast Guard Administration, Hung Hua Construction, Jong Shyn Shipbuilding, Ministry of National Defense (MND), MND Armaments Bureau, MND Material Production Center, National Chungshan Institute of Science and Technology, National Defense University, and the Taiwan Navy. International participants included DCNS, Harris, L-3 Communications, Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, and Thales.

Harris also will provide the Falcon RF-7800V handheld VHF Combat Net Radio for general use by the Army.

AUS: Defence to upgrade battlefield communications network

Defence has signed a significant contract for an upgrade to the next generation of military communications for the Australian Defence Force.

This contract with Boeing Defence Australia is a critical milestone in achieving a modern and networked Army, and is expected to create around 250 new jobs across Australia in the defence industry sector.

The contract, valued at $665 million, will see Boeing design, develop and deliver a modern, digital communications system to support the deployment of operational headquarters and enable access to Defence’s strategic networks.

Under Project LAND 2072 Phase 2B, Defence will replace ageing mobile communication systems and computer networks, providing leading-edge digital wideband voice, data and video services over wireless and wired infrastructure.

MELBOURNE, Fla., July 28, 2015 — The U.S. Navy has awarded Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS) a two-year, $29 million full-rate production contract to provide key avionics components that will enhance flight crews' targeting capabilities on the U.S. Navy's and Australia's F/A-18 E/F Super Hornet fighter aircraft and EA-18G Growler electronic attack platform.

The avionics are a critical part of the Distributed Targeting System which will significantly improve the aircraft's networking capabilities, enhance targeting precision and shorten the time from target sensing to shooting.

The Australian Government has given second pass approval for LAND 2072 Phase 2B to provide the Australian Defence Force with the next generation of battlespace telecommunications network capability, with an acquisition program cost of around $900 million.

Approval of this project is a critical milestone in achieving a modern, networked Army. This equipment will enable deployed forces to operate more effectively, providing digital communications from theatre headquarters to the unit-level.

This project will enable Army and elements of the Air Force and Navy to replace ageing mobile communications and computer networks. It will provide commanders with an increased level of situational awareness, command and control, and information sharing capability.

News Story: No bidders in (Philippine) DND’s assault vehicle deal

MANILA, Philippines - Defense officials declared a failure last month’s bidding for the supply of eight brand new amphibious assault vehicles worth P2.5 billion for the Marines.

The STAR learned that the bidding did not attract any offer from suppliers, and that only Samsung Techwin of South Korea purchased bid documents, but did not submit a bid.

In a letter to the Department of National Defense’s Bids and Awards Committee (BAC), Samsung Techwin said it might not be able to satisfy some conditions set by the bid documents, including the government’s position to seek a two-year warranty, a major cost driver.

Samsung Techwin said the amphibious assault vehicles are normally for combat operation, and that their suppliers are not willing to extend the warranty coverage beyond the first year.

MELBOURNE, Fla., Jan. 31 (UPI) --Australia's Department of Defense has ordered Falcon radios from the Harris Corp. of Florida for its armed forces.

The order is part of Australia's tactical radio modernization program for its armed forces and will provide service personnel with secure Type-1 voice and data communications.

The value of the order is $235 million.
