MANILA, Philippines - Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV yesterday warned President Duterte could face impeachment at the House of Representatives in May for committing various “impeachable offenses,” including ordering extrajudicial killings.
Trillanes did not say why the impeachment could happen in May even as he acknowledged that the House – from where possible charges against the President could emanate – is dominated by administration allies.
“It’s clear that President Duterte was involved in multiple murders when he was mayor of Davao City. Aside from that, the template of the Davao death squad (DDS) is now happening in the (drug-related) extrajudicial killings in the past eight months,” Trillanes told those who attended the Kapihan sa Manila Bay forum.
“There’s culpable violation of the Constitution, violation of due process and human rights, so that (extrajudicial killings) is a crime against humanity… We want him removed through impeachment,” he said.
Duterte used to brag during the campaign that he had killed criminals with the DDS, but now, “he’s washing his hands of the controversy,” according to Trillanes.
