Four major opposition parties have agreed to demand Defense Minister Tomomi Inada's resignation over her handling of "daily reports" in which a Ground Self-Defense Force (GSDF) unit participating in U.N. peacekeeping operations in South Sudan used the term "combat."
The four opposition parties, including the Democratic Party (DP), agreed on Feb. 15 to press for Inada's resignation, and lashed out at the Defense Ministry for failing to report the existence of electronic copies of the daily reports to Inada for about a month after the files' discovery. They lambasted the ministry for what they described as a deep-rooted culture of covering up inconvenient truths. The parties are poised to strongly press for Inada's resignation through Diet debates.
