News Story: Clashes Ongoing in Kunduz, Governor Says Situation Improving

Provincial Governor of northern Kunduz Assadullah Omarkhail has said the situation in Kunduz is improving but that heavy clashes are ongoing.

"There is good coordination between Afghan security forces and the forces are trying to maintain security of Kunduz and have control over all areas," Omarkhail said.

"NDS, police and army forces are trying to maintain the security."

He believes that the Taliban has been defeated in Kunduz and "they failed to reach to their aim."

"Taliban was defeated in their attack and now the situation is good," Omarkhail said.‎

In the meantime, a local police commander, Mohammad Ali said that most parts of the city had fallen to the Taliban on Monday night except the airport, NDS office, governor's compound, Bala Hisar and police headquarters.

He said that the government forces have started fighting with the Taliban street by street.

TOLOnews correspondent Hamid Sherzai said that the ground forces are also receiving air support and air strikes have been launched in different parts of the city.

He says that clashes are still ongoing in some parts of the city.
