News Story: US bases in SE Asia could be target of Chinese surge missile attack

A US defense expert recently stated that China may launch a surge attack against US bases in Southeast Asia or its Pacific carrier fleet, according to a Cantonese broadcast on Voice of America, cited by Duowei News, an outlet run by overseas Chinese.

The report comes amid continuing tensions over territorial disputes between China and the Philippines and Vietnam in the South China Sea and between China and Japan in the East China Sea

The report stated that China has taken increasingly aggressive action in the East and South China seas, under the guise of protecting its territorial claims and sees the US presence in Southeast Asia as a threat to its ambitions of becoming a great power.

To prevent the US military from interfering in future military action China might want to launch against its neighbors over sovereignty claims, China has strengthened its military might in recent years, especially in terms of its anti-access/area denial capabilities.
