News Story: Russian alignment with Asia to be fixed foreign policy


Russia is abandoning its strategy of aligning itself with the West in favor of becoming a part of the East, according to a commentary from Duowei News, a US-based Chinese political news outlet.

Russia's geographical position has long enabled it to serve as a bridge between the East and the West, Duowei said, though since the collapse of the Soviet Union in the 1990s Russia has been perceived to be abandoning socialism and trying to position itself closer to Europe and the United States.

However, after Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine last March, the country has been hit hard by economic sanctions from the West and distanced from Europe. Boxed into a corner, Russia has restructured its strategy to turn towards Asia, which is not only gradually becoming the heart of global economics but is also growing in international political influence, Duowei said.
