US reconnaissance aircraft were detected only 200 kilometers from Chinese oil rigs in the disputed waters around the Xisha (Paracel) islands twice on June 30 and July 2, according to officials of the Vietnam Coast Guard interviewed by the state-run Vietnam Television.
A US aircraft, apparently a P-8A Poseidon of the United States Navy, was reported flying low over the Haiyang Shiyou 981 oil rig on June 29. A Y-8T electronic aircraft equipped with the Gaoxin-4 Communications, Command, Control and Intelligence system was soon dispatched to the air space to confront the US patrol plane. Three more appeared over the Haiyang Shiyou 981 again on July 2.
