News Story: PLA's new Type 056 corvette deployed to disputed Paracels


The Luzhou, the People's Liberation Army Navy's newest Type 056 corvette, will be deployed to the disputed Paracel Islands in the South China Sea, reports the Chinese-language Jiucheng Daily News.

The PLA Navy currently operates 13 Type 056 corvettes, the paper said, adding that the Luzhou has similar capabilities to the littoral combat ship of the United States Navy. The vessel is designed to combat the enemy in shallow waters, and China plans to build a total number of 20 of the warships.

The light warship is equipped with two YJ-83 sea-skimming anti-ship cruise missiles, a FL-3000N short range missile system, a 76mm main gun and two triple torpedo for anti-submarine warfare operations, the paper said.
