Saab is working with three different suppliers of machinery and composite parts in India. A sourcing office has recently been set up in Bangalore to focus on supplier development, further strengthening the presence in the country.
After having key resources travelling to India to establish work packages with the suppliers, a permanent resource from the aerostructures unit of Saab has now been placed in India. The main focus is to support the next phase - increasing the volumes and coordinating deliveries.
"We are now at the stage where a number of establishment projects are moving into a mass production phase, requiring a permanent presence," explains Christer Börefelt, Saab's representative in Bangalore.
The sourcing office is based at the premises of the Swedish Trade Council in the heart of Bangalore.
"The primary responsibility is to monitor the industrialisation of component production and be Saab's extended arm here. The role also includes quality monitoring and first article inspection before the suppliers can deliver to our assembly lines in Sweden," says Christer Börefelt.
Saab develops, industrialises and manufactures complex airframe assemblies for the world's leading aircraft manufacturers, including both Airbus and Boeing. Saab is part of the Boeing 787 programme as well as the A380 and A320 programmes. The collaboration with suppliers in India has emerged from the ongoing programme's need for lower costs while maintaining a focus on quality and delivery. Production in India is now an important part of Saabs production flow and will remain so in the future.
Saab's aerostructures unit has three suppliers in India:
- CIM Tools in Bangalore, which manufactures machine parts for the Boeing 787, the Aileron A320 and specific components for the Airbus A380.
- TAML (Tata Advanced Material Limited), which manufactures small to medium-sized composite parts for the Boeing 787.
- QuEST Global Manufacturing, which produces sheet metal and machine parts for the Boeing 787.

October 21 2011,Saab India Technologies Pvt. Ltd. inaugurated the Saab India Technology Centre, a Research and Development Centre, in partnership with Mahindra Satyam in Hyderabad. The Saab India Technology Centre, SITC, will form a bridge between India and Sweden. The aim of the centre is to support the internal operational excellence and optimization initiatives within Saab, while also supporting Saab to expand in the Indian market. An initial base of 100 skilled Indian engineers to be inducted by the close of 2012 will form the backbone of the Centre. The SITC is expected to increase its headcount to at least 300 over the next three years.
