AUS: Hornets heading to Perth in support of CHOGM

Eight Royal Australian Air Force F/A-18 Hornets will fly into Perth today in support of the Australian Government’s contribution to the security of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), to be held from 28-30 October 2011.

The Hornets will touch down at the Royal Australian Air Force Base Pearce. They will join a range of Australian Defence Force (ADF) capabilities that will be in place throughout the lead-up to and during CHOGM 2011 to support the Western Australian Police and other government agencies, to ensure the conduct of a safe and secure CHOGM 2011.

The Commander of the Joint Task Force, Rear Admiral David Johnston said the ADF routinely provides specialised support to augment the Federal, State, and Territory agencies during major national events and ADF aircraft are an integrated part of the overall security arrangements for CHOGM 2011.

“The Hornets have deployed to WA to be available to support the Western Australia Government provide a secure environment for the conduct of CHOGM 2011 in Perth,” Rear Admiral Johnston said.

“Air Force fighter and surveillance aircraft will conduct training activities in the Perth area to enhance the capability of Australian Defence Force in the conduct of domestic counter terrorist and security operations.  This is an important component of the Australian Government’s security arrangements for CHOGM 2011.

“The training will be conducted in and around Perth between 24 and 26 October. Familiarisation with the local area is essential for pilots and crews. Whenever possible the ADF will seek to minimise any disruptions to local communities,” Rear Admiral Johnston said.

Additionally, Blackhawk helicopters will continue training in the Perth metropolitan area for short periods until 26 October 2011 to gain awareness of hazards and for pilots to familiarise themselves with operating around the CHOGM 2011 venues.

The ADF greatly appreciates the support and understanding of local communities when they undertake vital training activities and will work to minimise the impact by endeavouring to provide information to the public in advance where possible.
