News Story: U.S. wants to 'proceed forward' on full THAAD deployment - Pentagon

WASHINGTON, Aug. 4 (Yonhap) -- The United States hopes to move forward with the deployment of four additional launchers for the THAAD missile defense system in South Korea, the Pentagon said Friday.

THAAD, or Terminal High Altitude Area Defense, is designed to shoot down short-, medium- and intermediate-range ballistic missiles in their terminal phase of flight.

South Korea hosts THAAD launchers in the southern county of Seongju to counter North Korea's nuclear and missile threats.

"We would like to proceed forward and we're working with the Republic of Korea government to achieve that," Navy Capt. Jeff Davis, a Pentagon spokesman, told reporters.
