MANILA, Philippines - The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) is now awaiting the delivery of sniper rifles from the United States to give more teeth to its ongoing campaign against homegrown terrorist groups.
Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana confirmed 60 Barrett sniper rifles are due for delivery to the AFP, most of them going to elite military units.
Lorenzana, who is also working to acquire Russian-made sniper rifles for the AFP, said the purchase of these weapons from Moscow has to go through procurement processes.
“It is already due for delivery by May as those which we may acquire from Russia has to go through various procurement stages,” Lorenzana said.
Army chief Lt. Gen. Glorioso Miranda earlier said they would be having an additional inventory of Barrett sniper rifles that the previous administration has purchased from the US for more than P30 million.
He also said the rifles are due to arrive soon and will be given to the troops to enhance their fighting capability against terrorists.
