TUBOD, Lanao del Norte , Philippines – The government peace panel is set to meet with communist rebels in the Netherlands on April 2 to 6, the Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process (OPAPP) announced here yesterday.
Peace adviser Jesus Dureza said the government panel is optimistic that the communist rebels will agree to a unilateral ceasefire, noting the military has already agreed to the proposal.
Dureza, who attended the Lanao Month of Peace celebration kickoff here, revealed some communist leaders are not yet agreeable to a unilateral ceasefire because this will hamper their “revolutionary tax” collection activities.
Dureza said there are still several items and concerns previously discussed by both panels, including the unilateral ceasefire, that will be taken up in the next meeting.
