Hanoi (VNA) – The Philippine military announced that a notorious sub-leader of the Abu Sayyaf insurgent group was killed in the northern province of Tawi-Tawi on March 14.
According to the military’s announcement, Buchoy Hassan, also known as Black or Bocoi, was killed during an operation launched by the Tawi – Tawi Joint Task Force and police at his residence in Barangay Panglima Alari in Sitangkai. The soldiers also seized one M16 rifle, five speedboats and several outboard motors in the operation.
Hassan, 48, had been wanted in Malaysia for his involvement in the kidnapping of a Chinese citizen at the Pom Pom island resort in Sabah in November 2013. He reportedly recruited cohorts and acquired several speedboats to sustain his illegal activities and became a key facilitator in the illegal drugs trade in Tawi-Tawi.
