News Story: Japanese parliament slams N. Korea over missile launch

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Japan's House of Councillors condemned North Korea on Wednesday for test-firing ballistic missiles toward Japan earlier this week.

The resolution, adopted unanimously, called North Korea's recent nuclear and missiles developments, including Monday's launches, a "new phase of threat." They are a "clear provocation to the security of our country, region and the international community," it said.

The upper house urged the government to strengthen its unilateral sanctions on North Korea to make it abandon its nuclear and missiles programs and to resolve the long-standing issue of North Korea's past abductions of Japanese nationals.

It also called for the thorough implementation of U.N. Security Council resolutions imposing sanctions on North Korea and banning the country from using ballistic missile technology and conducting nuclear tests.
