The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) said on Tuesday representatives of six regional countries will meet on Wednesday in Moscow to discuss the issue of peace in Afghanistan.
According to MoFA, the director of the policy and strategy department at the ministry will attend the meeting on behalf of Afghanistan, and that the meeting is not an alternative for peace talks between government and Taliban.
“Such a meeting cannot be replaced with the Afghan-owned peace talks, but it can be seen as (these countries working) in cooperation to support the Afghan government’s efforts for the peace process," Shekib Mustaghni, spokesman of MoFA said.
In this meeting, representatives of Afghanistan, Pakistan, Russia, India, China and Iran will come together to discuss Afghanistan.
Although it is believed that the meeting will not be able to bring Taliban to the peace talks table, the involvement of Russia in Afghanistan’s affairs is expected to be a focal point of the meeting.
