Thailand will be forced to take sides in the face of the growing rivalry between global major powers, a seminar was told.
The seminar addressing the impacts which major world powers are likely to have on the country's security strategy was organised by the Royal Thai Army War College at the Army Club on Vibhavadhi Rangsit Road yesterday.
Panitan Wattanayagorn, adviser to Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwon, told the gathering that major powers will continue to pursue policies of seeking allies and friends to strengthen their power, particularly as US President Donald Trump has taken office.
Their competition has been growing, forcing Thailand to decide whether to take sides, he said, adding there are also risks involved in choosing sides.
While picking a wrong side will land the country in trouble, staying neutral will get Thailand stuck in the middle of fights among superpowers. It will be hard for the country to maintain a balance, said Mr Panitan, a political scientist and an expert on international relations.
