News Report: Prime Suspect in Bangladesh Cafe Attack Shot Dead

Police in the Bangladesh capital said Friday they have shot dead the prime suspect in last year's brutal attack on a cafe in Dhaka.

Officials said Nurul Islam Marjan was considered one of the masterminds of the cafe attack in July at the Artisan Bakery in Dhaka, where 20 hostages, mostly foreigners, were killed.

Police say another suspected terrorist was also killed in the early morning shootout. The identity of the second militant was not immediately clear.

While Islamic State claimed responsibility for the bakery attack, Bangladesh officials said the attackers were members of the Jamaat-ul-Majahideen Bangladesh, a domestic group that has been banned for more than 10 years.

Since the cafe attack, security forces have killed at least 45 Islamic extremists.

Bangladesh has experienced a wave of attacks in recent years on dozen of secular bloggers, writers, publishers, members of minority groups and foreigners.
