News Story: Chinese aircraft carrier, warships now at South China Sea

Led by China’s Liaoning aircraft carrier, a group of warships entered the top half of the South China Sea on Monday noon after passing southeast of the Pratas Islands of Taiwan, the island’s defense ministry said.

The ministry said the aircraft carrier is now heading southwest as part of its routine exercise.

However, the ministry spokesman Chen Chung-chi declined to say whether Taiwan fighter jets were scrambled or if submarines had been deployed.

Instead, Chen said “staying vigilant and flexible has always been the normal method of maintaining airspace security.”
