News Report: About 30,000 Indonesians Attend Rally to Support Jakarta's Governor

About 30,000 people attended unity rally to support Jakarta's Christian governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama, who has been accused of blasphemy, media reported on Sunday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Citizens from across the country gathered in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta to support the governor after at least 200,000 Muslim protesters took to the streets on Friday demanding that the police to arrest Purnama, BBC News said.

Police reportedly estimated the crowd at 30,000.

Purnama is an ethnic-Chinese who angered Indonesians in September over criticizing conservatives for citing a verse from the Quran, according to which non-Muslim is banned from governing over Muslims. Jakarta's governor was accused of blasphemy, which is punishable in Indonesia by up to five years in prison.
