by Hamid Sherzai

Local officials in Baghlan on Monday said scores of Taliban militants launched a coordinated attack on parts of the province late Sunday night, including provincial capital Pul-e-Khumri city.

Officer‎ in-charge at Baghlan police headquarters, Amin Gul Husainkhail, said intense fighting between government forces and the Taliban has broken out in the area and the militants have blocked Baghlan-Kunduz Highway.

"Conflicts are ongoing in parts of Baghlan, but the security forces have inflicted heavy losses to Taliban. We are trying to eliminate them. We have cleared several villages. Taliban's attack on Baghlan has failed," Husainkhail said.

Reports from the frontlines in Pul-e-Khumri indicate that the Taliban are trying to seize control of the provincial capital.
