During a media forum in Manila, former Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile said independent foreign policy means the Philippines has to give up its current security agreements with its key ally, the United States.
“If we want to be independent, which I have to caution everybody to be a little bit more circumspect about it, we have to renounce all of these commitments,” Enrile said.

“Once we do that we are jumping into an international pond where we have no salbabida (life jacket) in case we don’t know how to swim alone. ‘Yan ang problema dyan, (That's a problem out there)” he added.
