A week before an arbitration tribunal issue its ruling on a case filed by the Philippines to challenge China’s claims in the West Philippine Sea, Philippines has urged the United Nations to take stance by upholding the rule of law.
Ambassador Lourdes O. Yparraguirre, the country’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, called on the international community to strengthen the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) by supporting the enforcement of the forthcoming arbitral award.
She said the enforcement of the award “will depend on our collective will to enforce it as States Parties and through the United Nations, because we believe in the rule of law to follow obligations which we have assumed.”
