News Story: China may get tough to defend sovereignty claims - think tank

China may use tough means to defend its sovereignty and the integrity of its nation in maritime disputes in the South China Sea if its bottom line on national interests is crossed, a Chinese think tank said Monday.

Luo Yuan, executive vice president and secretary-general of the Beijing-based China Strategic Culture Promotion Association, wrote in a letter to China's nationalistic tabloid Global Times that China has always advocated handling disputes through peaceful means.

But that does not mean China will smile at all of its troubles and avoid resorting to force to deal with disputes because it understands that "where there is precaution there is no danger" and "courage to fight is the road to discuss peace," the PLA major general said.
