China may not be participating directly in military strikes against the Islamic State jihadist group but its hovering presence continues make an impact in other ways, according the Beijing-based Sina Military Network.
To date, China remains the only permanent member of the UN Security Council that has not engaged in combat operations against ISIS in Syria and Iraq.
The US-led coalition has continued its assault on ISIS targets in recent weeks with the aid of Syrian rebel forces. On Oct. 2, the UK deployed multiple fighter jets, with France joining in on Oct. 8 by bombing an ISIS training facility. American F-16 fighters also blew up two ISIS-controlled power stations on Oct. 10. Though Russia is not part of the coalition, as it supports the regime of President Bashar al-Assad, it has also commenced carrying out air raids, though Western countries claim the attacks have been mostly against rebel forces than ISIS targets.
China has so far maintained a detatched position on the Syrian crisis, but this has not stopped widespread speculation over whether the People's Liberation Army will eventually get involved.
