Deputy Secretary of State Antony Blinken will travel next week to Japan, the Republic of Korea, and China, October 5–10, to discuss key political, economic, and security issues with a wide range of government officials and non-governmental experts. This is his second trip to Northeast Asia and third to the Asia-Pacific over the last 9 months.
On October 5, Deputy Secretary Blinken will meet with senior government officials in Tokyo to reaffirm the U.S.-Japan alliance and discuss a wide range of shared interests. While in Tokyo, the Deputy Secretary will also meet with business leaders, students, young innovators and entrepreneurs to highlight the importance of innovation to the United States and Japan.
Deputy Secretary Blinken will travel to Seoul on October 6-7 to meet with government officials to discuss the strong U.S.-Republic of Korea alliance and cooperation on bilateral and global issues, including on the new frontiers of cyberspace, health, environment, and space. On October 7, Deputy Secretary Blinken will give remarks on the U.S.-Korea alliance ahead of President Park’s visit to Washington later next month.
On October 8, the Deputy Secretary will travel to Beijing to meet with government officials following on Chinese President Xi Jinping’s state visit. There, he will discuss next steps in U.S.-China engagement and areas for cooperation on global challenges, as well as exchange views on bilateral and regional issues.
Deputy Secretary Blinken’s final stop will be in Shanghai on October 9 to meet with the Party Secretary, financial experts, entrepreneurs, and U.S. government exchange program alumni to discuss a range of bilateral and regional issues.
