Taiwan could set aside a budget beginning in 2016 for the first phase–blueprints and design configuration–of domestically built submarines, a ruling Kuomintang legislator said Friday.
Lin yu-fang expressed hope that the opposition Democratic Progressive Party will give the project its full support in the wake of its release that day of a National Defense Policy Blue Paper.
The policy paper advocates "untying the knot of arms procurements" and working on improving Taiwan's ability to develop its own submarines, next-generation fighter planes and upgrade its national defense industry.
