News Story: US support expressed for Taiwan's submarine program


Taiwanese legislators Lin Yu-fang, representing the ruling Kuomintang and Chen Tan-sun, representing the opposition Democratic Progressive Party, successfully convinced various US senators and members of Congress to support Taiwan's initiative to build its own submarines, according to the Central News Agency based in Taipei.

During their visit to Capitol Hill on Sept. 9, the Taiwanese delegation met with Senator Ted Cruz and Congressman Michael McCaul, chairperson of the House Committee on Homeland Security, as well as Congressman Chris Van Hollen to discuss trade and military ties between Taipei and Washington. Lin said, the United States has begun to treat seriously the request of the Republic of China Navy to build its own diesel electric submarines.
