News Story: Taiwan military to hold aircraft takeoff, landing drill on freeway

Taiwan's military will hold its annual Han Kuang series of exercises later this month, including a drill to practice emergency takeoffs and landings of fighter jets on a freeway, the country's Ministry of National Defense said Tuesday.

The drill is set for Sept. 16 on the Minxiong section of the No. 1 National Freeway, which passes through the southern county of Chiayi, military officials said at a news conference.

It is one of four sections of that freeway designated as emergency runways in the event of war.

Aircraft models used in the drill this month will include the F-16 A/B, Mirage 2000-5, and Indigenous Defensive Fighter, as well as the E-2K airborne early warning aircraft, a CH-47 helicopter, a OH-58D reconnaissance helicopter and two AH-1W Super Cobra attack helicopters, said major general Li Ting-sheng, director of the Air Force's Combat Readiness Training Division.
