A benchmark peacekeeping activity for the Asia Pacific region which enhances the ability of partner nations to contribute to international peace operations is being co-hosted by Australia and Thailand.
PIRAP JABIRU 2014 is being held in Bangkok from today (28 July) until 7 August 2014.
This biennial multilateral desktop peace operation seeks to improve multinational readiness for participation in integrated United Nations peace operations.
Commanding Officer of the Australian Defence Force’s Peace Operations Training Centre, Lieutenant Colonel (LTCOL) Matthew Nash, said PIRAP JABIRU was first conducted in 1998 and now includes military and police from up to 22 Asia Pacific nations, discussing peace operations in contemporary times.
“The theme for PIRAP JABIRU 14 will be ‘Putting Vulnerable Populations First’, as today’s missions are likely to have the protection of civilians as a mandated task,” LTCOL Nash said.
“Winning the trust and confidence of the local people requires personnel that are not only well trained and equipped, but who are also sensitive to and respectful of the local customs and culture.
“PIRAP JABIRU 14 provides an opportunity to develop shared approaches to resolving the complex problems inherent in modern peacekeeping operations,” LTCOL Nash said.
PIRAP JABIRU 14 will be using simulation technology for the first time to make the activity even more realistic for participants.
