News Story: Taiwan fully prepared to defend Taiping Island

Taiwan's military is fully prepared in the event that Vietnam or the Philippines tries to take control of Taiping Island in the South China Sea by force, according to a report from the Hong Kong-based weekly magazine Yazhou Zhoukan.

Taiping Island is the largest of the disputed Spratly Islands in the South China Sea. It is administered by Taiwan but is also claimed by China, Vietnam and the Philippines.

The Yazhou Zhoukan article claims that if Vietnam or the Philippines carries out an attack on Taiping Island, Taiwan will be able to use its Lockheed C-130 Hercules four-engine turboprop military transport aircraft to fly a team of special forces and paratroopers to the island within four hours, along with portable missiles launchers, artillery and assault vehicles.
