AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND, Wednesday 25 June 2014 – The ADMM-Plus Experts’ Working Group (EWG) on Maritime Security held its Workshop on Counter-Piracy Operations on 24 – 25 June 2014 at The Pullman Hotel, Auckland, New Zealand.
This Workshop is the first activity of the ADMM-Plus Maritime Security in its second cycle of 2014 – 2017 under the co-chairmanship of Brunei Darussalam and New Zealand. It was co-chaired by Mr Daniel Mellsop, Head, International Branch, Ministry of Defence, New Zealand, and Colonel (L) Pengiran Norazmi Pengiran Haji Muhammad, Deputy Commander, Royal Brunei Navy.
The Workshop shared experienced on counter-piracy operations at national, bilateral and multilateral levels, and legal elements in counter-piracy. In discussing these topics, participants identified the requirements for coordination and effective cooperation, assets and resources, priority for military-to-military cooperation, roles for private maritime security companies, and legal capacity-building in counter-piracy operations.
The Workshop also conducted syndicate sessions where participants addressed sea piracy issues, and identified lessons learnt.
The ADMM-Plus EWG on Maritime Security is aimed at developing more effective defence and military response to maritime strategic challenges in the Asia-Pacific region, with the objectives to enhance maritime cooperation, identify risks in the maritime domain, especially non-traditional threats, and widen information sharing.
