ASEAN DEFENCE SENIOR OFFICIALS' MEETING WORKING GROUP

MYANMAR, Tuesday 25 February 2014 - The ASEAN Defence Senior Officials’ Meeting Working Group (ADSOM WG) was held at the Myanmar International Convention Centre, Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar. The Meeting was chaired by Mr Kyaw Thu, Deputy Director General, Ministry of Defence, Republic of the Union of Myanmar / Myanmar’s ADSOM WG Leader.

The Meeting discussed the progress of the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM) cooperation namely: The Use of ASEAN Military Assets and Capacities in Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief; ASEAN Defence Establishments and Civil Society Organizations Cooperation on Non-Traditional Security; ASEAN Peacekeeping Centres Network; and ASEAN Defence Industry Collaboration.

Brunei Darussalam briefed the Meeting on the upcoming activities of the new initiatives on ASEAN Defence Interaction Programmes and Establishment of Logistics Support Framework to be held in Brunei Darussalam.

In discussing and considering the new ADMM initiatives, the Meeting fully support the draft Concept Paper on Establishing a Direct Communications Link in the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting Process initiated by Brunei Darussalam; and looked forward for further deliberations of the proposal on the Non First-Use of Force Agreement by Vietnam. These two proposed initiatives will be discussed and considered further at the ASEAN Defence Senior Officials’ Meeting (ADSOM) to be held on 28 – 29 April 2014 in Nay Pyi Taw.  

The Meeting also discussed and considered the draft Joint Declaration of the 8th ASEAN Defence Ministers Meeting and draft ADMM Three-Year-Work Programme 2014 – 2016.

The ADSOM WG Leaders also discussed the proposed ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting-Plus Experts’ Working Groups Work Plan on Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief, Maritime Security, Military medicine, Counter-Terrorism, Peacekeeping Operations, and Humanitarian Mine Action, before meeting their counterparts from the Plus Countries tomorrow.

Brunei Darussalam was represented by Haji Adi Ihram bin Dato Paduka Haji Mahmud, Acting Director of Defence Policy, Ministry of Defence, Brunei Darussalam.

ASEAN DEFENCE SENIOR OFFICIALS' MEETING PLUS WORKING GROUP

MYANMAR, Thursday 27 February 2014 - The ASEAN Defence Senior Officials’ Meeting-Plus Working Group (ADSOM-Plus WG) was held  at the Myanmar International Convention Centre, Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar.

The Meeting was chaired by Mr Kyaw Thu, Deputy Director General, Ministry of Defence, Republic of the Union of Myanmar / Myanmar’s ADSOM-Plus WG Leader.

The Meeting reviewed and briefed the progress of the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting-Plus Experts’ Working Groups (ADMM-Plus EWGs), by the former co-chairs of the EWGs, namely: EWG on Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief by Vietnam and China; EWG on Maritime Security by Malaysia and Australia; EWG on Military Medicine by Singapore and Japan; EWG on Counter-Terrorism by Indonesia and the US; and EWG on Peacekeeping Operations by the Philippines and New Zealand.

The Meeting also discussed and briefed the proposed ADMM-Plus EWGs Work Plan for the next cycle, by the current co-chairs of the EWGs, namely: EWG on Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief by Laos and Japan; EWG on Maritime Security by Brunei Darussalam and New Zealand; EWG on Military Medicine by Thailand and Russia; EWG on Counter-Terrorism by Singapore and Australia; EWG on Peacekeeping Operations by Cambodia and Republic of Korea; and EWG on Humanitarian Mine Action by Vietnam and India. These work plans will be adopted by the ASEAN Defence Senior Officials’ Meeting-Plus (ADSOM-Plus) to be held on 30 April 2014 in Nay Pyi Taw.

Earlier, the ADSOM-Plus WG Leaders had made a Courtesy Call on Commodore Aung Thaw, Deputy Minister of Defence, Ministry of Defence, Republic of the Union of Myanmar / Myanmar’s ADSOM-Plus Leader.
