TAIPEI — Taiwan’s navy unveiled a prototype today of a road-mobile launcher carrier for the supersonic Hsiung Feng 3 (Brave Wind) anti-ship cruise missile at a pre-show press tour for the biennial Taipei Aerospace and Defense Technology Exhibition (TADTE). The show will run from Aug. 15 to 18.
Chungshan Institute of Science and Technology (CSIST) officials said the launch canisters on the road-mobile launch vehicle were the same as the ones for ships. The HF-3 has been outfitted on Taiwan’s Perry-class (Cheng Kung-class) frigates for several years, and some of the Ching Chiang-class patrol ships and Kidd-class destroyers recently were outfitted with the HF-3. However, there was no evidence until today of a land-based road-mobile variant.
The military-run CSIST produces the Hsiung Feng family of anti-ship missiles. CSIST officials said the trailer was locally built, but DAF Trucks, a Dutch truck manufacturing company under Paccar Inc., provided the truck.
