News Story: Type 052 destroyer to give PLA largest Aegis fleet in East Asia

Military analysts suggest the PLA Navy will have the largest Aegis fleet in East Asia when it boosts the number of its Type 052D (Wiki Info) destroyers to 10, reports our sister newspaper Want Daily.

Equipped with electronically scanned array radar, the Type 052D class has been dubbed the "Chinese Aegis" as it is believed to have similar capabilities to the US Navy's Arleigh Burke class destroyer. China currently has four Type 052D destroyers in service but Chinese analysts say the PLA will have at least ten ships in this class in the future. The Hong Kong-based newspaper Wen Wei Po said Beijing is sending a strong message to neighbors including Japan and South Korea.
