News Story: China's naval force growing faster than anticipated

Nations in the Asia-Pacific region lag behind the United States in acquiring weapons for naval use, but China's rapid build-up of its naval capacities might pose a threat to the United States, the Russian National Defense Magazine said in a report published in September 2011.

China and India had taken the lead by ramping up their naval strength, followed by Japan, South Korea, Australia, Indonesia and other countries. The Navy of countries based in the Asia-Pacific region, including Taiwan, might even be moving towards an arms race scenario. Even Singapore, Vietnam and the Philippines continue to enhance their naval battle capabilities, the report said.

While the United States would remain the most powerful naval force globally, Asia-Pacific countries are also fast transforming themselves into the newest members of a strong naval force club.
