Sri Lanka: Navy intercepts Australia bound Multi-day Trawler off Wennappuwa

Sri Lanka Navy intercepted another multi-day trawler illegally headed for Australia off Wennappuwa on 19th July 2012. The intercepted trawler was brought to Mutwal Fisheries Harbour with 67 persons onboard for handing over to the CID for further investigations. The arrested persons are all males and residents of Ampara, Batticaloa, Colombo, Jaffna, Negombo, Nuwara Eliya and Wennappuwa.

The trawler, named “Maria Thindari”, was detected by a Fast Naval Patrol Craft attached to the Western Naval Command. The arrest is the sixth made by the Navy within 10 days in Sri Lankan waters.

Navy’s vigilance has been able to avert 06 human tragedies in the prevailing rough seas and save the lives of 401 persons that included 381 men, 07 women and 07 children.
