127 soldiers about to deploy to Afghanistan were yesterday farewelled by Parliamentary Secretary for Defence, Senator David Feeney during an official farewell parade.
The parade, held at Gallipoli Barracks, Enoggera, comprised of soldiers preparing to serve with the seventh rotation of the Force Communications Unit (FCU-7). Many of the soldiers’ family, friends and colleagues attended to show their support.
“I would like to express my gratitude and appreciation for the professionalism, courage and dedication shown by these men and women as they prepare to serve on overseas operations,” said Senator Feeney.
“It was a privilege to personally farewell each specialist soldier. These are the people responsible for the provision of national command, welfare communications and information systems in and out of theatre.”
Commander 7th Brigade Brigadier Greg Bilton CSC, ADC said the parade was an opportunity for families and friends to pay tribute to the soldiers of FCU-7 and wish them a safe and successful tour of duty in the Middle East Area of Operations (MEAO).
“Every soldier here is an expert of their trade and an integral part of sustaining and enhancing operational effectiveness. I know they will proudly represent our nation and serve with utmost distinction and dedication,” he said.
FCU-7 consists of 127 personnel primarily from 7 Combat Signal Regiment, with small contributions from 1 Signal Regiment, 136 Signal Squadron and the Carbalah based 7 Signal Regiment.
FCU-7 will depart in early May. Positions range from Headquarters JTF633 in the MEAO through to forward operating bases and patrol bases in Uruzgan.
Deputy Chief of Army, Major General Angus Campbell was the Reviewing Officer at the parade. The Queensland Premier, the Hon Campbell Newman MP was also in attendance.
