News Story: North Korea to halt nuclear activities

North Korea has agreed to suspend some of its long-term nuclear activities, including uranium enrichment, and allow international Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors back into the country in return for food aid from the United States, it has been announced.

The US State department said that a recent round of talks between the US and North Korea, held in Beijing, had led to the introduction of a "moratorium" on nuclear activities at Yongbyon, the country's principal nuclear research site.

The agreement includes a halt on long-range missile launches, nuclear tests and nuclear activities at Yongbyon, including uranium enrichment activities, and will see the US provide 240,000 tons of food aid to the country.

North Korea has also agreed to allow IAEA inspectors to return to Yongbyon to confirm that the site's 5MW reactor and "associated facilities" have been disabled.
