News Story: (AUS) Submarine Institute warns Defence has left it too late to co-ordinate production of locally built submarines

PLANS to build 12 big submarines in Australia are running so late that unless extraordinary steps are taken quickly, the navy will be left without submarines when the Collins-class fleet is retired.

That warning comes in a submission to a parliamentary committee that meets today to investigate how equipment is bought and maintained for the Australian Defence Force.

The Submarine Institute of Australia says the plan to purchase at least 12 highly capable long-range submarines will require much greater levels of co-ordination across government if it is to be salvaged.
