KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 26 (Bernama) -- Bilateral and multilateral cooperation among members of the APEC Telecommunications and Information Working Group (APEC TEL) needs to be strengthened to counter negative acts which threaten the stability of Government, Malaysia said today at the Opening Session of the 44th Meeting of the APEC TEL held in Kuala Lumpur today.
Said Datuk Seri Kamaruddin Siaraf, Secretary General of the Ministry of Information, Communications and Culture, “Those with negative intent do not have any barriers in cyberspace and join hands in expressing their dissatisfaction through acts which amount to criminal breaches of the law in Economies such as Malaysia.”
“We take comfort in the fact that our friends in other Economies have every intention to assist us in trying to mitigate such criminal action. Unfortunately, diplomatic stances which have helped to foster close relationships between Economies and ensured our continued friendship, whilst respecting each other’s need for protecting the privacy of our citizens, may now be an impediment in our collective efforts to counter such negative acts. Perhaps it is time for APEC TEL to consider ways to deepen our collaboration whilst maintaining the balance of privacy and respect for one’s citizens,” added Datuk Seri Kamaruddin.
Some 220 delegates from 17 out of the 21 APEC economies, including officials and representatives from international organisations as well as telecommunications and ICT companies, are attending the APEC TEL 44 from 22 – 28 September 2011 at the Royale Chulan Hotel in Kuala Lumpur. The meeting is jointly hosted by the Ministry of Information Communications and Culture as well as the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission.
At APEC TEL 44, member economies and their partners will discuss and deliberate on matters related to telecommunications and ICT policy and regulation ranging from liberalisation to green ICT and disaster management as well as consumer protection. Cybersecurity is a major focus for APEC TEL in trying to strengthen the network infrastructure within the APEC region.
Increasing issues faced in relation to privacy and security have made it necessary for APEC TEL to maintain cybersecurity as an agenda at their bi-annual meetings in order to streamline with the overall APEC objective to promote trade, investment, liberalization and economic growth in the region.
“Malaysia recognises the importance of the work of APEC TEL to nurture the environment to meet APEC’s overall objectives and we would like to thank our TEL family for affording us the opportunity to contribute to APEC TEL’s work in a significant manner. Your support for Malaysia as the new Vice Chair of APEC TEL is very much appreciated,” concluded Datuk Seri Kamaruddin.
APEC TEL 44 is the start of the two-year term for the newly established team of Japan (Chair) and Malaysia (Vice Chair). Both countries will helm the APEC TEL Working Group from APEC TEL 44 until APEC TEL 47 in 2013.
