Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy Vice Admiral Somathilake Dissanayake attended the 10th Asia Security Summit (The Shangri-La Dialogue) held in Singapore. The Sri Lanka delegation was headed by Minister of External Affairs Hon. Prof. G.L. Peiris. Australia, Bangladesh, Brunei, Cambodia, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Japan, Republic of Korea, the Maldives, New Zealand, Pakistan, Russia, Singapore, Thailand, United Kingdom, United States and Vietnam participated in the 03-day summit held from 03rd to 05th June 2011.
The Shangri-La Dialogue is regarded as the most important regular gathering of defence professionals in the region and has now become a vital annual fixture in the diaries of Asia-Pacific defence ministers and their civilian and military chiefs of staff. By catering for their specific interests and needs, and by facilitating easy communication and fruitful contact among them, the Dialogue has helped to engender a sense of community among the most important policy-makers in the defence and security establishments of regional states and of major powers with significant stakes in Asia-Pacific security.
On the side lines of the summit, Vice Admiral Dissanayake called on Admiral Robert F Willard, Commander of the United States Pacific Command, and held cordial discussions on mutual interests and bilateral importance.
In addition, Commander of the Navy accompanied the Honourable Minister for meetings with Hon. Dr. Ng Eng Hen, Minister for Defence of Singapore, Hon. K Shanmugam, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Law of Singapore, Hon. Liam Fox, Secretary of State for Defence of United Kingdom and Hon. Sergie Ivanov, Deputy Prime Minister of Russia. They also attended the reception and dinner hosted by Acting President of Singapore Mr. Abdulla Tarmugi at The Istana (President’s House).
