PACIFIC OCEAN (NNS) -- The guided-missile destroyer USS John S. McCain (DDG 56) delivered supply parts to USS Curtis Wilbur (DDG 54) on March 14.
The parts Curtis Wilbur received were used for the reverse osmosis system, which produces drinking water aboard the ship.
"The chief engineer aboard the Curtis Wilbur put out a requisition for the parts and found out we had a spare aboard," Lt. Jeremiah Cheatum, operations and safety officer aboard John S. McCain said. "Our ship [John S. McCain] is similar to the Wilbur in a lot of ways, and a lot of the parts we have are the same ones they use too."
In the past, John S. McCain has worked with our US Navy vessels in transferring parts.
Cheatum he said he has been a part of several evolutions like this in the short time he has been aboard McCain.
"We always oblige with requests like this," Boatswain's Mate 1st Class (SW) Joshua S. Minix, deck department leading petty officer said. "Today, first thing this morning, we loaded everything up in our rigid hull inflatable boat and got the equipment over there, as soon as we could."
John S. McCain delivered the parts by the use of a rigid hull inflatable boat. The ship is also equipped with a functional helicopter pad to transfer parts, fuel and personnel by helicopter too.
"This is all part of the strike group strategy, working with Destroyer Squadron 15 and the George Washington Carrier Strike Group," Cheatum said. "We've established plans to aid each in times of need such as this. We're always prepared to help."
John S. McCain and Curtis Wilbur are currently underway to provide disaster relief and humanitarian assistance to Japan as directed in support of Operation Tomodachi.
