SEMARANG, INDONESIA Monday 14 March 2011 - Opening this year’s series of bilateral exercise was the HELANG LAUT Exercise between the Royal Brunei Navy (RBN) and the Tentera Nasional Indonesia – Angkatan Laut (TNI-AL), which was held on the 7th until 14th March 2011 at Semarang Naval Base, Indonesia. This exercise marks an important event in the RBN’s calendar as it is the first time for the RBN warships to have berthed alongside Semarang Port, Republic of Indonesia.

KDB SYAFAAT and KDB AFIAT were the two Fast Patrol Boats (FPBs) from the RBN that were involved in the exercise, together with two TNI_AL warships, KRI SURA and KRI KERAPU. This year’s exercise was the 29th series between both navies and it once again served as a successful platform to strengthen the friendships.

The aim of the exercise is to strengthen the diplomatic relationship as well as to enhance mutual co-operation and interoperability through the development of common operational doctrines and procedures in naval evolution and maritime tactics.  The exercise also aimed to enhance relationship between personnel from the participating ships through interactive social and sports programme.

The exercise was divided into three phases; harbour phase, sea phase and post exercise debrief. The harbour phase is designed to prepare ships and personnel for the upcoming sea phase that involves operational exercises and emergency drills as well as exchanging knowledge. The RBN ships’ crew also had the opportunity to conduct community relations activities such as minor maintenance work on one of the local mosques, Nurul Yaqin. During the sea phase ships from both navies conducted series of naval evolutions involving navigation, communication, seamanship and tactics. The exercise is concluded with post exercise debrief and the signing of post exercise report.

Officiating the opening ceremony was the TNI First Admiral Arief Rudianto, Eastern Fleet Chief of Staff and the closing ceremony was officiated by Lt Col(L) Norshahrinizam Bin Hj Talib, the Deputy Commander Task Group (DCTG) for Helang Laut 12B/10.
