Gao Hwa-zhu, Minister of National Defense urged the military today when hosting the New Year gathering to follow the steps of our ancestors and matyres, take example from their patriotism and sacrifice and spare no efforts to fulfill the duty of defending our nation and protecting our people.

The gathering was held this morning in the Bo-ai Barrack and was host by Minister Gao, leading Yi Ji General Lin Zhen-yi, Deputy Minister Yang Nian-zu, General Zhao Shi-Zhang, three deputy chiefs and the joint directors. In his speech, Minister Gao expressed his appreciation of the whole staff for their efforts in the past year and urged the military to keep working hard on their duty to meet people’s demand.

During the Chinese New Year’s holiday, a great number of soldiers are still on duty on the island or off the island. They have given up their opportunities to get together with their families for the sublime cause to secure the safety of our sovereignty and society. Minister Gao expressed his recognition and thankfulness to these companions.

He cited that today was the day when the residents of Da-chen Island withdrew and transferred to Taiwan. People in Taiwan wouldn’t have the chance to enjoy today’s peaceful and secure life but for General Wang Sheng-Ming’s lead in resisting the enemy and guarding Yi-jiang-shan. The army should remember their bravery and sacrifice and take example from them.

Looking back, Gao said, we will see how history and the military tradition have been made by those fearless matyres, who were willing to sacrifice their lives to protect our nation. This is the tradition the military has to work with tooth and nail to pass along.

In addition, Gao urged all the supervisors to show empathy for their inferiors. He asked them to show concern, understand how their inferiors feel and take care of their lives, so that the army would stick together like a family.

At last again he expressed his gratitude for the army’s sweats in the past year, from the drills, reorganization, relief work to the reinforcement of military disciplines. He encouraged the staff to work on the foundation of the past and strive for better in the coming year.
