MANILA, Philippines - President Duterte last night allayed fears that he might expand martial law to include Luzon and the Visayas.
“There will be no nationwide martial law. I will look stupid before the eyes of the public if I do that,” he told a news conference at the Batasan after his second State of the Nation Address.
However, he did not rule out expanding martial rule to areas “where there is a revolution.”
Opposition lawmakers have expressed apprehension that Duterte might expand martial law after an overwhelming Congress vote extending his proclamation in Mindanao up to the end of the year and the Supreme Court decision upholding such proclamation.
