Armed with a favorable ruling from the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague, Filipino Fishermen sail back to Scarborough Shoal on Wednesday.
“We can now assert our rights to fish around the Scarborough Shoal,” Larry Alaras, a boat skipper told Inquirer.net on Tuesday, “tomorrow, we are going to sail back to the Panatag. We are a bit afraid but the United Nations is on our side,” he said.
On May 16, 2016, China announced a unilateral fishing ban in the West Philippine Sea that includes the Scarborough Shoal.
The fishing ban will last until August 1.
