News Story: S China Sea land reclamation aimed at distracting US from Hainan

China aims to prevent the US from monitoring activity on the island of Hainan by distracting the country with its land reclamation efforts in the South China Sea, according to Kanwa Defense Review, a Chinese-language military magazine based in Canada.

Hainan is currently the staging base of the People's Liberation Army Navy to project its power projection into the disputed South China Sea. China had deployed three Type 094 Jin-class ballistic missile submarines to Yalong Bay in Hainan island. From there, China can launch attacks against US military bases on Guam and in Alaska with JL-2 submarine-launched ballistic missiles. Chinese missiles from Hainan could also potentially target Australia too.
