China began a three-day live-fire exercise off the coast of Fujian province on Friday as Taiwan wrapped up its annual Han Kuang military exercise.
Taiwan's main opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), which advocates for Taiwanese independence, does not think the Chinese military drills are related to Taiwan's presidential election in January next year, but people in political and academic circles fear that the exercise is a warning against moves to promote Taiwan independence.
DPP spokesperson Wang Min-sheng told Want Daily on Thursday that the information his party has acquired revealed little on the question of whether the Chinese military exercises are a warning or are related to the presidential election.
The DPP will continue to pay attention to the development of the exercises, Wang said.
