Satellite images from of DigitalGlobe, a commercial vendor of space imagery and geospatial content from the US, indicate that a midget submarine is being built in central China's Wuchang Shipyard, a type of submarine which is completely new, according to the UK's IHS Jane's Defence Weekly.

The photos was originally taken on Oct. 24, 2014 for Google Maps. In that photo, the midget submarine was seen berthed at the pontoon used for fitting out submarines inside the shipyard. The smaller sub has an approximate length of 35 meters and beam of 4 meters. It probably has a surface displacement of between 400 and 500 tons. The reason for China to develop this midget submarine remains unknown.
